About Mani Land Fiji

Mani Land Fiji, also known as the Pure Land Nunnery, is an international Chinese Buddhist monastery for nuns. A community of resident bhikkhunis lives and practises here.

Mani Land Fiji lies in Belego, Savusavu, on the island of Vanua Levu, Fiji, 1.4 km from Amitabha Monastery Fiji, the monastery for monks. Before the bhikkhunis formally took up residence in 2024, our kind teacher Amada compassionately gave the monastery its name, “Mani Land”, meaning the land from which all merit and virtue arise. It is a place where the teaching of Fruition-Ground Awakening (果地觉) is put into practice, and it carries the mission of guiding those who come after and continuing the wisdom-life of the Buddha.

Although the monastery lies in the tropics, it enjoys a uniquely pleasant climate. Days are sunny without being scorching; at night cool breezes bring a pure and comfortable calm. Abundant rain throughout the year yields fresh fruit and vegetables, offered to the Sangha. Surrounded by pristine tropical rainforest, with mountains and streams shaped by nature and a peaceful, unspoiled ecology, it lies far from the noise of the world, an ideal place for wholehearted practice.

The resident bhikkhunis faithfully uphold their monastic duties. Their daily life centres on studying and practising the Fruition-Ground Awakening Pure Land teaching, keeping the morning and evening services, sharing in communal work, and living according to the Vinaya and the Sangha’s procedures. Since the monastery was founded, the Sangha has held tonsure, precept-conferral and rehabilitation ceremonies and other formal acts of the Sangha (karma). In 2026 the Pure Land Nunnery successfully held its first short-term monastic ordination programme, open to women around the world who aspire to the holy life, so that together they may cultivate the path to liberation.
